Dogs may be man’s best friend, but some days will leave you frustrated and feeling like your dog is against you. Even the smartest dog was once a mischievous pup like yours. You can develop a relationship with your pet and teach it how to behave in a house by training it.
Make the dog know that the crate is it’s home when you are doing crate training. Leave food near or inside the crate and leave the door open. This will help them associate good food to the crate.
Ensure that your dog gets enough activity. Just like humans, dogs can become bored easily. Conditions of boredom are not conducive to training. When your dog gets regular exercise, he will be much happier and will pay attention more easily. Before every training session, prepare your dog by taking them for a walk.
Your dog needs to learn good feeding habits, and this is best accomplished with a clear routine. Teaching your dog to realize that when you place its food bowl down, it will be removed within 10-15 minutes, will help it understand that there is a feeding schedule to stick to. Your dog will learn to finish eating before you take the dish away.
You need to teach your dog right away that they should drop or back away from something when you say “leave it.” This simple command will get them to stop chewing on household items or furniture, and can keep them away from dirty or potentially dangerous items outside the home.
With patience and a handful of tasty treats, you can easily teach your pet to roll over. The first step is to get the dog to lay down. The next step is to palm the treat and hold your hand beside your dog’s head. Slowly raise the treat over your dog’s head to the opposite side. He should roll his body over while following the treat. Whenever you dog does roll over, actually say the words, “roll over.” Continue to do this until your dog actually rolls over whenever you say the words without using the treat. Be patient if they don’t get it right away; they’ll get it soon enough!
Whenever your dog jumps onto you, grab their paw and gentle squeeze to make sure they understand that jumping is not good behavior. This will not hurt your dog if done lightly, but it will impart the information that jumping up is not appropriate. After a while, they will stop jumping on people because they will associate it with the uncomfortable feeling.
No matter how long you have owned your dog, you can always train them. Start your training as soon as possible so as to avoid any accidents when the dog doesn’t know any better.
